Burundi is one of the ancient kingdoms of Central Africa that became independent on July 02, 1962. It has an approximate surface area of 27,834 km2 inhabited by approximately 8 millions resulting a population density of 287.42 per km2. The capital is Bujumbura and languages are Kirundi (official), French (official), and Swahili.
Burundi is located in Central – East Africa and its neighboring countries are: Rwanda in the North, Tanzania in the South and the East, and Democratic Republic of Congo in the West. It is inhabited by three population groups: the Tutsi, the Hutu, and the Twa. The main activities in which these three groups have traditionally been engaged have always been agriculture (millet, sorghum, maize, sweet potatoes, beans, bananas …) and stock rearing (cattle: the ankole breed of cow; small livestock: goats, sheep, and chickens.
Burundi has experienced a cycle of interethnic violence between Hutus and Tutsis since the 1960s, the latest being the 1993 civil war. These cyclic wars pushed hundred of thousands of people to flee the country. Now the country is in post –conflict period and its activities are mostly centered on reconciliation and reconstruction.
